How Scarlet started it all...

Operation Scarlet, Inc
.
was founded in February 1991 by Dawn Hertzog and six other Shar-Pei

owners in the Lancaster, PA area.  The organization was named in memory of Scarlet (pictured

above) who was a beautiful, mahogany red Shar-Pei.  Scarlet was in need of a home and Dawn

came to her rescue.  Unfortunately, Scarlet died only two short months later from a dreaded

malady called bloat.  Here is Scarlet’s Story  written by Dawn Hertzog after Scarlet’s death in

 1989.

How Scarlet started it all...

Hey, kids, this is Scarlet looking down from above; You fit in my dreams like a hand in a glove.

You see, while I still lived down there on earth, I had a dream and have now seen its birth.

My life wasn't easy and I wished I could find someone who was loving, patient, and kind.

Well, that someone found me and I'm here to say,  I was one happy Shar-Pei.

While down there on earth, I dreamed that someday, there'd be a place for unwanted Shar-Pei.

Just a temporary home where their needs could be met, 'til the day they became someone's loving pet.

As you can see, my dream has come true, it's called Operation Scarlet, Inc. rescue.

I was the first rescue kid, so you see, that is why it was named after me.

I've looked down and have seen you kids in despair; Some of you starved, and some with no hair.

I've seen one of you deaf, and one with one eye, and one of you left by the road side to die.

One tied to a lamp post by a busy highway, and some of you turned out to find your own way.

Oh, how you all have endured such pain!  But through it all, you did not complain.

I just wonder, if the whole human race could somehow spend time in our place,

Would they be more aware of just how much we depend on their care?

Would they realize, we sometimes mess on the floor because we don't know how to open the door?

And would they ever stop to think, if our water bowl's empty, we can't get a drink?

To get our own food would be a neat trick, and we can't call a doctor when we get sick.

We're not just a toy they can play with today, and then when they're tired, just throw us away.

Well kids, this is Scarlet signing off for now, and here's hoping my dream has somehow,

Made your life easier while you wait, a family who loves you

And knows you're first rate.
